Groundhog Day in Illinois

There are a few of things you can count on in Illinois: The Cubs won't win a world series, The Taste of Chicago Festival in Grant Park and one of their Governors being investigated. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested by FBI agents last week on public corruption charges. The Governor's own words captured on FBI wiretaps will seemingly do him in. He was allegedly attempting to sell the senate seat vacated by Barack Obama in a "pay to play" scheme. Blagojevich, endorsed by Obama twice, is a product of the same Illinois political cesspool as Tony Rezcko and our president elect which leaves burning questions: How can his entire circle be corrupt and he not be?

Five of Blagojevich's former cronies have plead guilty to public corruption charges and reportedly Rahm Emmanuel-Baracks chief of staff- has discussions with the Governor regarding the vacant senates seat which were caught on the wire taps. Obama's office has issued an internal report stating that "nothing improper was discussed with regard to the senate seat". To add further intrigue, Blagojevich-who has remained defiant in the ensuing firestorm-has pulled the old race card out of his political deck by selecting former Ill. Attorney General and African American Roland Burris for the senate seat.

You have to admit this pick was brilliant for it pits liberal democrats against one another with Obama firmly in the middle. "Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat," Obama said in a statement. Will members of the Congressional Black Circus...er, Caucus side with the only potential African Senator or with stand firm with their grand Puba Barack? Buckle your seatbelts. This is where the honeymoon ends, the real Presidency begins.
