Fashion None-Sense

I have noticed more and more over the past couple years a very disturbing fact. A large percentage of black men are dressed like bums and or Hoodlums. When does one ever notice a polished or decently dressed African American male under the age of 40? Its nearly impossible to find a young black male whose fashion ideology has not been touched by Rocca wear or Ekko. Hoodies, sneakers and the dreaded saggy jeans hanging off the behind are trademarks or many young blacks. Unfortunately its not a purely urban phenomena. Its hard to distinguish between urban and suburban dwellers. Young black men from all socio- economic classifications are "rockin" their gear as well as a fair number of whites. Who is to blame for this madness? Obviously the entire hip hop culture, which encompasses music, fashion, and language...or lack thereof.

I place the blame squarely at the feet of Russel Simmons who is to hip hop fashion what Howard Stern is to shock radio. Simmons has made millions with his "Phat Pharm" clothing line which has spawned dozens of copy cat brands- Eminems Shady Wear, 50 Cent's G-Unit, and the previously mentioned Rocca Wear which was formally co-owned by Jay Z, just to name a few. No place is safe from this epidemic- even church goers, and college students have no shame in "representin".

There are millions of young men who do not own a suit, a pair of slacks or any kind of traditional formal wear. Drive down any urban setting and its difficult to distinguish the employed from the unemployed. Thank you Russel Simmons-this is your legacy.
