Mile High City Gets A Little Higher

Several hundred people stood in line in Colorado on January 1st enduring the cold weather. They were not however waiting on jobs, they were waiting for their opportunity to purchase Marijuana legally as Colorado becomes the first State to 'experiment with legalized pot. "It's a huge deal for me," said Andre Barr, a 34-year-old deliveryman who drove from Niles, Mich., to be part of the legal weed experiment. "This wait is nothing." All eyes will be on the State as it becomes the first to attempt to implement a legal Marijuana industry. 24 shops opened Wednesday, mostly around Denver with few reported problems. However, the long term consequences are yet to be realized. aside from the perceived economic benefits; increased tourism and taxation, there are numerous unresolved legal and logistical questions. How will Colorado's employment laws be compromised? For instance will someone challenge his or her employers drug policies since Marijuana is now legal?  Will it now be viewed as no different than cigarettes?

What has to be a concern for Colorado residents is the coming deluge of potheads into their cities and towns. Not that all pot smokers are criminals, but I would be willing to wager that a large majority of criminals are pot smokers. I predict that several years from now the voters of Colorado after being inundated with increased crime, vagrancy, unemployment, and legal entanglements will come to regret this decision. This is certainly a harbinger of things to come. While the potheads are celebrating, America should be in mourning.
