Latest Shooting Reignites False NRA Narratives
The recent massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland Florida in which 17 people were shot to death has resulted in an all out assault on the National Rifle Association. As customary after a mass shooting a deluge of criticism and blame is directed at the NRA. The country's largest gun lobby has long been deemed responsible for obstructing gun control legislation, however this time the anger seems to have reached a tipping point. Large corporations such as Fed Ex, Enterprise rent-a-car, United, Delta and United airlines have announced they will no longer honor NRA discounts. The popular perception from the left is the notion that the NRA greases politicians in order allow mass murders to obtain weapons. If only their financial hold upon our federal legislatures could be lifted as many on the left believe, common sense gun control laws could be enacted. If only this were true.
There are no laws that could be enacted that would have prevented the Florida shooting. The gunman purchased his weapon legally. Unfortunately the shooting was made possible by an astonishing series of law enforcement gaffs and missteps. The FBI failed to notify its Miami field office of tips it had received about the shooter. a tipster contacted the FBI and warned that the shooter would "explode"....."slip into a school and shoot the place up". Another called Broward county sheriff's office to warn that the shooter had a "arsenal of weapons". Add this to the his disturbing social media post, visits by social services to his home and dozens of 911 calls about his violent behavior. New gun laws won't prevent law enforcement negligence or incompetence. Keeping America's school children safe will not happen in Washington. The responsibility for effective measures rest upon local authorities to enact policies and legislation that will prevent future school massacres. Inner city schools have long been ahead of the curve posting armed guards at schools. perhaps its time for all schools to consider it.
