Why The Left Should Hate Brazil
On a March night earlier this year in Rio, the city's first black council woman was shot and killed along with her driver. The killing of Marielle Franco, also a lesbian champion of the LGBTQ and afro Brazilian communities, sparked protest for justice from tens on thousands in Rio and an out pouring of support from around the world. Ms. Franco was an outspoken critic of alleged abuse of power by military and police in the Rio slums or favelas. Ms. Franco was raised in Mare' one of the most dangerous slums of Rio. Extrajudicial killings by police and military in the Favelas' has been a major political issue for human rights activist around the world. Of 1,275 registered cases of killings by on-duty police between 2010 and 2013, 99.5 percent of the victims were men,79 percent were black. Brazil is country in spite of its multi racial population has made very little progress with regards to minority advancement. Many Afro-Brazilians are still confined to the margins of society. Today, almost 70 percent of people living in extreme poverty are black. They are almost nearly absent from positions of power and have virtually no economic clout. The state of racial progress in Brazil is akin to America in the 1940's and 50's. Based on the global lefts' own parameters, Brazil should invoke the contempt that it has traditionally reserved for Israel and the United States.
The often repeated narrative about the U.S. is that it was founded on slavery. The history of Brazil is even further deeply rooted in the slave trade, Led by the Portuguese, some 4 million slaves were imported to Brazil-40% of the total and approximately five times as many as America. Brazil was the last country in the west to abolish slavery in 1888. However unlike the United States never underwent a civil rights movement. Hence the lack of racial progress in Brazil currently. Yet, Brazil maintains a relatively pristine reputation. Ms. Franco's killing, police abuses, recent massive corruption scandals, and economic tumult belies the countries perception as a tropical paradise. Israel has been a frequent target of what is known as BDS-boycott, divest, sanction movement for its alleged apartied against Palestinians. Would we ever see the BDS movement turn its ire toward Brazil? Most likely w won't. Because the left's hatred is primarily reserved for western and largely white majority nations like the United states and Israel. One would find it difficult to name a country the lefts hates that is non western or non white. The left regularly directs its self righteous venom towards the two most decent countries on earth. Not to mention the American lefts long love affair with brutal Latin American dictators like the late Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. There is an old adage that says: those who are kind to the cruel will be cruel to the kind.
