Mass Media Manipulation
I have held the belief for quite sometime that the more television news one watches the less informed one is. The non-coverage of the Christian-Newsome murders in Knoxville is a classic illustration. Chris Newsome, 23 and Channon Newsome 21 were out on their first date.According to news reports, Christian and Newsome had gone on a date at a local restaurant on Saturday, January 6, 2007 but did not return home. During their night out the couple was hijacked, bound, blindfolded and taken back to Lemaricus Devall 'Slim' Davidson's rented house on Chipman Street where they were tortured.
According to trial testimony of the Knox County acting medical examiner, Newsome was repeatedly raped and then blindfolded, gagged, arms and feet bound and his head covered. Barefoot, he was either led or dragged outside the house to a set of nearby railroad tracks. He was shot in the back of the head, the neck, and the back, and his body then set on fire. Christian's death would come only after hours of sexual torture, the medical examiner testified. Christian suffered horrific injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was not only raped but savaged with "an object," possibly a broken chair leg, the doctor testified. She was beaten in the head. Some type of chemical was poured down her throat, and her body, including her bleeding and battered genital area, likely scrubbed with the same solution- all while Christian was alive. Her body was left in a trash can in the kitchen. Christian's parents found her abandoned vehicle. The following Monday with the help of her mobile phone provider. An envelope recovered from the vehicle yielded fingerprint evidence that led police to Lemaricus Davidson-one of the perpetrators.
Megan Williams, a twenty-year-old black woman, was sexually assaulted, tortured, and stabbed repeatedly by a West Virginia
Both is these crimes were committed by people who should be thrown in a vat of acid in my opinion. The key difference in these cases is that the Williams case received far more national coverage than the Newsome-Christian Murders. The news media is quite reluctant to cover vicious crimes by blacks against whites-want proof? The Jena six, Duke Lacrosse, noose hangings or any number of police shootings adds further evidence of selective coverage. One would be surprised to learn the significant number of black serial killers -whose victims were almost exclusively white women- which 99% of the public has not heard of( Coral Watts and Derrick Todd Lee). This type of intentional oversight has its dangers. You take an incident like the over-hyped Jena six, mix in the twenty hour news machine, throw in a march organized by any one of the media hogging civil rights pimps and you have a full blown distortion of reality. This manipulation gives blacks the view that were are under siege just as we were in 1950's and 60's.
The sensationalizing of crimes by whites against blacks further inflames the already off the chart sense of victimization that many blacks are inflicted with. The distortion-which borders on propaganda- ignores the sobering facts that blacks commit far more crimes against whites than do whites against blacks. A black man or womans chances of being killed by a white is virtually nil unless they're driving drunk.
I often quiz friends and associates about the above cases and not coincidentally, none of them have heard about the Christian- Newsome case or many other cases I could sight. (see Harvey murders). For me, the reason for this media bias is clear. If I had to list things that whites fear the most I would say being called racist and being sued are at the top of the list. Do I think there is some sort of conspiracy by the media? No I do not. However I do believe that there is a conscience decision on the part of the mainstream media to selectively cover certain stories with regard to race and crime.

Burch (who is black) was charged with the rape of a white Duke student at a party thrown by a black Duke fraternity. (Burch was not a Duke student.) He was let out on low bail, and then proceeded to rape a second person. No Wanted Poster was issued but police eventually found him a few months later; and for the two rapes he received a plea deal which effectively means it is possible that he might, at most, serve two years.
But he got no Newsweek cover, no marches, no editorials on the way his parents raised him, no rallies, and the media barely noticed the event.
Would I be delusional to believe that the race of those accused had no bearing on how the media treated these two cases?
